Virtual Light on Photos (free)

העיקר בקצרה (BLUF): The tool places a virtual light source right on your photo: drag it across the frame with the mouse and the picture is relit — with shadows, a specular highlight and crease shading. Depth is estimated in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded, no sign-up is needed and no tokens are charged.

How virtual light on a photo works

First a depth model estimates what is closer and what is farther in the shot. That depth map is turned into an approximate normal map — the surface tilt at every point. A shader then computes light from a point source: the closer a surface is to the lamp and the more it faces it, the brighter it becomes, while distant areas fall off.

You can drag the light across the photo with a mouse or a finger. The light height sets how high the lamp hangs above the scene: a low light gives long shadows and strong relief, a high one gives soft even lighting. Intensity, specular highlight and ambient light are tuned separately, and the light colour is set by temperature — from warm tungsten to cold daylight.

Shadows and relief without a 3D model

Shading is computed from the depth map: the tool traces a ray from each point towards the light and checks whether a closer surface blocks the way. That is how shadows from a chin, clothing folds and objects appear. Crease shading emphasises small dips, and the relief slider strengthens or softens the volume.

The limitation is worth knowing: this is depth-based relighting, not generative relighting. There is no real three-dimensional scene behind the frame, so old complex shadows and reflections are not fully removed — the tool relights the photograph for a new light position.

Privacy and price

All processing happens on your device: both the depth estimation and the relighting itself. The file is never sent to a server, no account is required and no tokens are charged. The result downloads as a separate PNG at the full resolution of your photo, and the original stays untouched.

If your browser cannot open a format locally, the tool says so honestly and suggests saving the photo as JPG or PNG instead of sending the file to a server.

שאלות נפוצות

Is virtual light on a photo really free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, needs no login and spends no tokens.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Both the depth map and the relighting are computed on your device and the file is never transmitted.

How is it different from ordinary brightness filters?

A filter brightens the whole frame evenly, while here the light comes from a specific point: nearer surfaces and surfaces facing the source get brighter, and blocking geometry produces shadows.

Which formats are supported?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF — whatever the browser can open itself. The result downloads as PNG at the original resolution.

Can I move the light on a phone?

Yes. The light point can be dragged with a finger and all sliders work on mobile. The first run downloads the depth model; after that it comes from the browser cache.
